Musical mutterings

Where did it all start?...my love for heavy music?..
...look, all I remember about the 70s were sideburns, Star Wars and big bouncy page 3 titties, but moving into the 80s, my brother Tim and his mucka Greg Nelson had Rainbow, Quo and AC/DC records knocking around.
This stuff looked and sounded like it shouldn't be tampered with! Tame by today's standards, but there was something drawing me in....like I was circling a plughole into the fiery pits of Hell!

It took root.
Guitars.
Crunchy guitars.
Before that....I was tampering with music, like some pale glass of warm flat shandy.....but this was like being offered a little shot of gritty whisky.
Who knows where this would lead?
Fucking six-string powerhouses! Guitar music celebrated like some tickertape parade! A snowstorm flurry of riffs!
This music was engaging! Exciting! Enthralling! What else is out there?

....you've got to remember though, records and radio we're the only method of hearing popular bands back then.
There was hissy weird cassette tapes too. But mostly, people borrowed, bought or begged for music in its physical format....the 12' record. ..a slab of plastic.
Them vinyl records were way too big to pinch. ...not like stealing music these days.

Anyways, I digress. ....it was AC/DC that put the wind in my sails....they had a knack for a clever simple guitar lick....a snap of chords sliced so right you'd feel it in your very core.
....has anyone ever listened to Problem Child and right after the guitar solo you got that tingle down your spine as the maracas start shaking and them chords chop through you like a chainsaw?
Tell me you don't feel that!
No other band can do that but AC/DC.
You could put a million different bands in line and ask them to play a DC track, not one of them has it.
No-one.
Only AC/DC can.
From that point forward it was daily doses of crunching guitars!

..oddly though...I don't listen to lyrics, but a voice needs to add to the music. It carries the melodies.
Its always the music, the sonic tapestry of instruments and sounds. How they intertwine and build sonic structures.
That is music.
Kings of Leon...you've got to love the sound of the vocals.....The rasp of Johny Cash....the swoop of Shirley Bassey.......Ray Davis of the Kinks...the way he sings them genius melodies  .......(imagine Ray Davis with modern day auto-tuning! Fuck! That would ruin their music! There's something about the way it's slightly out) ......a voice is an instrument.
It carries the melody and mood. Essential.
So...I conclude...heavy music detonates!

I love heavy music!

It makes the difference. It can turn my day around.

Make your favourite music it's own universe....and wallow in its splendour .....it's the closest thing to magic we have!
It's the universal language and it can move us all more than stars exploding and universes collapsing....seriously.

...whatever is happening in this world or your life...don't let all that crap disrupt the pin-drop poignancy or bowel-loosening rumble you've got going on through your speakers!

You're the soundtrack to your life!

Let's hear it....turn it the hell up!
